A Question Before The New Year | Empower Her Blog

Before the calendar changes, God may be asking you a question you haven’t stopped to answer yet.
For as long as I can remember, New Year’s Eve has always been a time of reflection for me.
Even as a young girl, I remember being in church with my family, attending watch night services.
There was something so special about those nights.
We would sing together, worship together, and just before the New Year arrived, we would join hands as a family and pray over the year ahead.
I can still remember the butterflies I felt in my stomach...this quiet reassurance that if God allowed me to make it into the new year, everything would be okay.
Now, as I prepare to step into another year (if it’s the Lord’s will), the Holy Spirit gently reminded me of a passage of Scripture that I believe is worth sitting with today:
“‘All these I have kept,’ the young man said. ‘What do I still lack?’” -Matthew 19:20 (NIV)
In this story, a young man approaches Jesus.
From the outside looking in, he appeared to be doing everything right.
He had followed the commandments.
He had discipline. He had status. He had wealth.
Yet Jesus lovingly revealed that something was still missing.
When Jesus told him that if he wanted to be complete, he would need to let go of what he had built and give to others, the man walked away sad because his wealth had become too central to his life.
Now, let me be clear: wealth itself is not the issue. God is not against provision, abundance, or increase. But when anything...money, position, success, comfort, or even people takes the place of God at the center, it becomes a problem.
So why did this passage come to mind?
I believe that as we stand on the edge of a new year, this is a powerful moment to pause and ask God a sincere question:
“Lord, is there anything I’m lacking?”
“Is there anywhere I’m missing the mark?”
Because the truth is, we can be doing many of the right things and still be misaligned. Scripture tells us that when the Lord is our Shepherd, we should not lack anything, yet if we’re honest, there are times when things we’ve accumulated, chased, or clung to can quietly block our view of where God is trying to lead us.
As I share this with you, I’m also doing the same.
On this New Year’s Eve, I’m going before my Heavenly Father with humility, asking Him to search my heart and show me anything that needs to be surrendered, adjusted, or released.
Next Steps Before the New Year Begins
As you reflect, here are a few gentle ways to respond:
-Create space to ask God honest questions.
Don’t rush past this moment. Sit with Him and invite Him to reveal what you may not see on your own.
- Consider a time of prayer and fasting.
Jesus said when we pray and when we fast, not if. These spiritual practices help quiet distractions and sharpen our ability to hear God clearly.
- Write down what God reveals.
Reflection becomes powerful when it turns into obedience. Capture what He shows you and ask for grace to walk it out.
-Release the outcome.
Trust that whatever God asks you to lay down, He already has something better prepared.
As we close out this year, my prayer is that you enter the next one lighter, clearer, and more aligned with God than ever before.
Happy New Year, Friend.
May this next season be marked by surrender, obedience, and faith.
If this message stirred something in your heart, take a moment tonight to pause, pray, and ask God one simple question:
“Lord, what do I still lack?”
You don’t have to rush the answer...just be willing to hear it.
