There’s something my job has taught me that I didn’t fully understand before: how to communicate with different kinds of people.
For a long time, whenever I worked jobs that were familiar, I noticed something looking back…I stayed around people who thought like me, talked like me, lived like me, and viewed life the way I did.
My world stayed small because my environment stayed familiar.
But in this season of life, I am grateful to work around all kinds of people.
People with different backgrounds. Different upbringings. Different beliefs. Different personalities. Some older than me, some younger. Some who see life completely differently than I do.
Is it always easy?
No 🤭
Because when we don’t agree on everything, we still have to learn how to communicate and work together to accomplish goals.
Honestly, it makes me reflect on my own faith journey.
Through serving in different ministries over the years, God has taught me so much, not just about Scripture, but about people.
One of my biggest prayers whenever God placed preaching and teaching on my heart was this:
“Lord, help me communicate your word in a way people can actually understand.”
Not just church people.
Not just people who grew up in faith.
Not just people who know all the Christian language.
But people.
Because what good is the message if nobody understands it?
That’s why Acts 8:31 hit me so deeply.
“How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.” - Acts 8:31 NIV
In this passage, Philip encounters the Ethiopian eunuch, a man who was trusted by high officials, yet still spiritually searching.
He was reading from Isaiah, trying to understand what he was seeing, but he couldn’t fully grasp it on his own.
Philip asked him:
“Do you understand what you are reading?”
And the eunuch responded:
“How can I, unless someone guides me?”
That response stays with me.
Because how many people around us are silently asking the same question?
How many people are curious about God but intimidated by church culture?
How many people have questions, but nobody willing to sit with them long enough to help them understand?
Sometimes as believers, we can become so comfortable inside the four walls of the church that we forget about the people outside of it.
Yes, community matters!
Scripture encourages us not to forsake gathering together. We need church. We need accountability. We need encouragement.
But, we also need to remember the people who may never walk into a church building unless someone first reaches out to them.
The coworker who acts like they have it all together.
The teenager across the street who just needs someone to care.
The friend who says they don’t believe in God anymore.
The family member who’s been hurt by church.
The person silently battling anxiety, depression, grief, shame, or disappointment.
Sometimes we assume people aren’t interested in God, when really they’ve just never had someone willing to meet them where they are.
And maybe that “someone” is you!
Friend, your life may be the first Bible someone reads.
Your invitation may be the seed that changes someone’s future.
Your consistency, kindness, and obedience may help someone encounter Jesus in a real way.
You never know what can happen from one invitation.
One conversation.
One “I’ve been praying for you.”
One “want to come to church with me this Sunday?”
Jesus called us to go.
Not just stay comfortable!
But, spread the Good News of Jesus.
This Week's Faith Moves:
When was the last time you invited someone to church?
When was the last time you intentionally included someone in your faith community?
Is there someone around you who may be spiritually searching right now?
Have you become so comfortable in your routine that you’ve forgotten the people outside the walls?
This week, ask God to place one person on your heart to reach out to.
Maybe it’s:
inviting someone to church
sharing your testimony
checking on a friend,
praying for someone in person
or simply showing kindness to someone who feels unseen.
Don’t underestimate the power of a seed planted in faith.
Because the truth is…how will they know unless someone tells them?
