Have you ever sat through a sermon, Bible study, or conversation about God and left feeling more confused than encouraged?
It seemed like everyone else understood what was being said, but you felt lost because no one explained what certain words or phrases actually meant.
If that’s you, you’re not alone!
One reminder I always keep in the back of my mind when sharing God’s word is this: keep it simple.
The reason is simple!
There was a time in my life when I would hear someone teaching the Bible and walk away confused.
Not because I didn’t want to learn, but because I didn’t understand what was being said.
Sometimes people would use church phrases, theological terms, or what I like to call “five-dollar words”, those fancy words that sound impressive but aren’t always explained.
There is nothing wrong with learning new words.
There is nothing wrong with using phrases that are common in church culture.
The challenge comes when we use words without taking the time to explain what they mean.
Think about it for a moment.
If someone is hearing the Gospel for the first time, how will they understand if no one defines what they’re talking about?
If someone is new to the faith, they may not know what words like sanctification, redemption, conviction, or even grace mean.
And, if they don’t understand, they may leave feeling discouraged rather than encouraged.
One of the biggest reasons people don’t share their testimony is because they think they need to sound like a preacher, theologian, or Bible scholar.
The truth is that God isn’t looking for perfection…He’s looking for obedience!
Sometimes the most powerful testimony is the simplest one.
Because of my own experience, I’ve learned to define what I mean early and explain things as clearly as possible.
My goal isn’t to sound smart.
My goal is to help people understand God’s truth!
Some Bible scholars even suggest that Jesus often taught at what we would consider a third-grade level.
What does that mean?
It means He communicated in a way that ordinary people could understand.
He used stories about seeds, farmers, sheep, fishing, coins, and everyday life to reveal deep spiritual truths.
Jesus wasn’t trying to impress people with complicated language.
He wanted people to understand the message.
That’s why I love what Scripture says:
“The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand.” -Psalms 119:130 NLT
God’s word is sooo powerful enough to reach people exactly where they are! We don’t have to make it complicated. We simply have to be faithful in sharing it.
If God has placed it on your heart to share your testimony, encourage someone, teach a Bible study, create content, or simply tell others what He has done for you, remember this:
Keep it simple!
Someone’s breakthrough may be waiting on an explanation they can actually understand.
This Week's Faith Moves:
Read through your testimony and identify any church phrases that may need explaining.
Practice explaining a Bible verse as if you were talking to a friend who has never been to church.
When sharing God’s word, focus on being clear rather than sounding impressive.
Ask yourself: “Would someone new to the faith understand what I’m saying?”
Reflection Question: What is one biblical truth that changed your life, and how could you explain it in the simplest way possible?
A Challenge Before You Go...
Before you leave this post, take a moment and write down one thing God has done in your life.
Maybe He answered a prayer.
Did God help you overcome fear?
Or, He provided when you didn’t know how things would work out.
Now imagine explaining that story to a ten-year-old child. What would you say?
That’s probably closer to how God wants you to share it than you think.
Someone doesn’t need a perfect sermon. They simply need to hear what God has done for you.

New Here?
Hi, I am your friend, Breonna, here to help women trust God, apply His word, and actually build what He told them (even when they don't have it all figured out yet.)
