What the Kitchen Cabinet Taught Me About My Faith | Empower Her Blog
Friend, let me tell you how a whole kitchen cabinet got my faith together...and will do the same for you🤭
Not through a sermon...a kitchen cabinet!
For the longest time, there has been a cabinet in my parents’ kitchen that I honestly thought didn’t close properly.
You know, those cabinets where we keep disposable pans, bowls, containers, and dishes.
Well, every time I opened this cabinet, I could find what I needed, but whenever I closed it, it would never fully shut.
It always stayed slightly cracked open.
I assumed the cabinet was the problem.
Maybe, the door was off track or there was just too much stuff inside!
So, I left it alone.
But Friend, recently, I’ve been in a season of decluttering.
Let's just say those online videos on social media has been pulling at me.
I’ve been cleaning out my room, organizing my car, and getting rid of things that no longer serve a purpose in my life.
Last night while cooking dinner, I noticed that cabinet again.
This time, I had a different thought.
“What if I just take everything out?”
So, that’s exactly what I did!
I emptied the cabinet completely. Then, I began putting everything back. I stacked the pans neatly. I grouped similar items together. I created order where there had previously been chaos.
And to my surprise, everything fit!
Not only did everything fit, but the cabinet closed perfectly.
The problem wasn’t that there was too much inside.
The problem was that there was no order!
As simple as that sounds, I couldn’t help but think about how often we can live our lives the same way.
We consume sermon after sermon.
Podcast after podcast.
Video after video.
Post after post.
We gather information, inspiration, and encouragement, yet many of us still feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and spiritually stuck.
Why?
Because information without application can create clutter.
We can know a lot about God while neglecting to spend time with Him.
We can collect Scripture without actually living it.
We can fill our minds while our hearts remain disorganized.
But Friend, hear me when I say this...nothing compares to knowing God’s word and living it out.
Nothing compares to opening your Bible, reading what God says, asking Him for understanding, and then obeying what He reveals!
I am learning that clarity often comes through order.
Sometimes the breakthrough we’re praying for isn’t found in receiving more information.
Sometimes it’s found in slowing down long enough to organize what God has already given us.
This Week's Faith Moves:
1. Identify What’s Creating Clutter
Take a moment and ask yourself:
What has been consuming most of my attention lately?
Am I spending more time scrolling than studying Scripture?
2. Create Space for God’s Word
Even if it’s just 5-10 minutes a day, set an alarm time to read scripture.
Not to check a box or simply complete a reading plan.
But, read a chapter like Psalms or Proverbs, to hear from God.
3. Apply One Thing
Instead of trying to do everything you just read at once, Friend, focus on one scripture that's encouraging you and practice it consistently.
4. Trust God with the Process
Organization doesn’t happen overnight...there is still a mini pile of clothes in my bedroom that I need to take care of...HELLO!
Spiritual growth doesn't happen overnight.
Allow God to help you put things in their proper place one step at a time.
As the Psalmist writes:
“How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.” -Psalm 119:9 NIV
This week, before searching for another answer, another strategy, or another piece of advice, spend time with the One who has already given you His word!
You may just find out that what felt impossible to close was simply waiting for God’s order.
