If you would’ve asked me two years ago, “Could you ever see yourself being celibate and sharing publicly about it?”👀
……..
My response probably would have sounded a lot like, “You’re kidding, right?”
Mentally, I had already psyched myself out of several purity attempts.
And frankly, I didn’t think it could be possible to start over in abstinence while being in a relationship with someone!
You see, I never planned to start this journey.
It kinda, just happened.
One day, I was sitting in my empty apartment alone thinking about my life and relationships.
Certain thoughts as “What was my strongest connection?” kept replaying and I couldn’t seem to shake it away until I answered honestly.
Out of all the attachments I shared at the time the one I connected to the most with was lust.
Now, I know what you’re thinking.
How was lust your strongest connection?
What about your family?
What about your friends?
Didn’t you just say you were in a relationship with someone?
Yes.
Although I cherished all of those relationships, my affair with lust was one where I never saw life without.
In life,
I had experience in losing family members.
I had friends before to betray me.
I had my heart broken multiple times.
I had even let myself down!
Lust appeared to be the only connection that was reliable and never ending.
Within a split second, I had access to slip away in our affair without hurting anyone, so I thought.
When I finally made the decision to surrender my sexual desires to God, I did it privately.
First, I was too afraid to speak up because I didn’t want to embarrass myself if I chose to go back to lust.
To my surprise days quickly turned into months and before I knew it I arrived at marking years in celibacy!
I’m sure by now you’re curious of the benefits of me choosing No Sex And No Masturbation.
If I can sum it up in one word, I would choose freedom.
Once you invite the spirit of God into your situation freedom overwhelms what had you in bondage.
For the Lord is the spirit, and wherever the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17 NLT
God has a powerful way of disrupting the very things in our lives we feel we can’t live without to remind us He’s all we need.
Through the practice of celibacy, I’ve gained peace in places that were once uncomfortable.
I now realize lust brings convenience, not reliability!
I’ve a belief that lust has a damaging cycle to blind us from seeing the very things we really need to have in order to experience our true hearts desires.
What I once thought was pleasurable in the moment only kept me in this never ending cycle.
I no longer feel victimized by self-sabotage and fear of the multiple doors of perversion to enter my life that comes with lust.
Choosing God’s plan to take during our season in singleness benefits us more than simply going without physical pleasure.
The joy we gain is the strongest connection we could ever have because it’s keeping us to the One who is all powerful!
The peace we will experience surpasses our very own understandings.
Even in this moment I’m more confident in following because God’s grace and plans are always rewarding through obedience.
Using this gift of sharing my story I believe is bringing freedom to those who are battling with what God graced me to conquer.
And, I’m always hopeful because the best is yet to come! 😉
