Watch What You Say | Empower Her Blog

This past week, I spent some intentional time in prayer really seeking God and asking Him to show me the areas in my life that still need His healing and guidance. One of the areas He highlighted for me was communication.

The scripture that immediately came to mind was James 1:19:

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

Whew.

That verse hit differently this time.

On Sunday, not long after praying about it, I found myself in a situation where I lied. I hadn’t done that in a while and the moment it happened, I felt conviction. As soon as I walked away, I realized, “Wait… I just lied.”

And in that moment, I knew I had to correct it. So I apologized, not just to the person, but also to God, asking Him to help me get to the root of why I still respond that way sometimes.

The Holy Spirit gently reminded me that when I was younger, I used to struggle with lying. It became a defense mechanism...something I did out of fear, shame, or pressure to appear “okay.” But as I reflected more, I realized I wasn’t applying James 1:19 in that moment.

I wasn’t being quick to listen or slow to speak I was reacting out of emotion. I spoke too soon instead of pausing to let the Holy Spirit guide my words.

Sharing My Story For You

And I want to share this with you because maybe, like me, you thought communication was one of your strong areas. Maybe you’ve been showing up, leading, encouraging others, but deep down, you know there are still moments where your words don’t reflect your heart or God’s truth.

This isn’t to shame you, Friend.

It’s a reminder that God’s Word isn’t just something we read, it’s something we’re meant to live out, daily.

And that includes our conversations, our tone, our responses, and even our silence.

If you’re in a season where you’re learning how to communicate better, you’re not alone.

The Holy Spirit is ready to help you pause before reacting, speak with wisdom, and listen with grace. Let’s grow in this together. Let’s become women who are quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry because that’s where God can use our words to build, not break.

Verse of the Day

James 1:19 NIV, "My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry"
