This past week, I spent some intentional time in prayer really seeking God and asking Him to show me the areas in my life that still need His healing and guidance. One of the areas He highlighted for me was communication.
The scripture that immediately came to mind was James 1:19:
âMy dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.â
Whew.
That verse hit differently this time.
On Sunday, not long after praying about it, I found myself in a situation where I lied. I hadnât done that in a while and the moment it happened, I felt conviction. As soon as I walked away, I realized, âWait⊠I just lied.â
And in that moment, I knew I had to correct it. So I apologized, not just to the person, but also to God, asking Him to help me get to the root of why I still respond that way sometimes.
The Holy Spirit gently reminded me that when I was younger, I used to struggle with lying. It became a defense mechanism...something I did out of fear, shame, or pressure to appear âokay.â But as I reflected more, I realized I wasnât applying James 1:19 in that moment.
I wasnât being quick to listen or slow to speak I was reacting out of emotion. I spoke too soon instead of pausing to let the Holy Spirit guide my words.
Sharing My Story For You
And I want to share this with you because maybe, like me, you thought communication was one of your strong areas. Maybe youâve been showing up, leading, encouraging others, but deep down, you know there are still moments where your words donât reflect your heart or Godâs truth.
This isnât to shame you, Friend.
Itâs a reminder that Godâs Word isnât just something we read, itâs something weâre meant to live out, daily.
And that includes our conversations, our tone, our responses, and even our silence.
If youâre in a season where youâre learning how to communicate better, youâre not alone.
The Holy Spirit is ready to help you pause before reacting, speak with wisdom, and listen with grace. Letâs grow in this together. Letâs become women who are quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry because thatâs where God can use our words to build, not break.
Verse of the Day
James 1:19 NIV, "My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry"
