When Friendships Feel Harder: Building Community Again | Empower Her Blog

Every year, about a month before my birthday, I find myself reflecting on life. It’s almost like a natural reset button, my chance to pause, look back, and ask the hard questions: Where am I? Where do I want to be? And what needs to shift for me to get there?
This year, my reflection landed on one word: relationships.
As kids, making friends came naturally. We had classrooms filled with peers, shared experiences, and built connections without even thinking about it. But adulthood is different.
I’ve been through seasons that have made me more cautious, more discerning. And somewhere along the way, I realized I don’t have as many close friendships as I once did.
Right now, I can feel the void of community in my life. The Bible says, “If you want friends, show yourself friendly” (Proverbs 18:24), and that verse has been sitting heavy on my heart.
It’s not just about wanting friendships, it’s about being intentional enough to create space for them.
I decided not to stay stuck in reflection but to take action. For me, that looked like three practical steps:
Prayer creates connections: I asked God to help me in this area, to guide my steps, and to bring the right people into my life.
Be open to wisdom: I opened up to my family. The Bible reminds us that wise counsel helps us grow strong.
Move by faith, not feelings: Despite the emotions that make feel low thoughts, such as "You're missing out." "You're not approachable." I began reflecting on small, intentional steps to be more open, present, and approachable and plans to apply them here soon.
Sharing My Story For You
Maybe you’re in this season too, longing for connection but unsure where to start. Can I encourage you? Don’t be afraid to go out and seek community.
Friendships may not appear overnight, but with prayer, wisdom, and persistence, God has a way of placing the right people in your path at just the right time.
So here’s where I am: open, willing, and ready to build. And if your heart longs for the same, I pray you find the courage to take your first step today.
Verse of the Day
Proverbs 18:24 (KJV) "A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother."
Your Next Step
Take five minutes today to pray over your relationships. Ask God to show you where you need to open your heart and who He may already be placing in your life.
