When God Calls You, It's Never About You | Empower Her Blog

When God calls you, He interrupts your normal for a reason, just ask Moses.
This morning, I found myself reflecting on Exodus 3.
You know, the moment God called Moses.
Moses wasn’t preaching. He wasn’t leading. He wasn’t in a pulpit or on a stage.
Moses was simply working, helping his father-in-law, handling his everyday responsibilities… and that is where God showed up.
And honestly? That hit home for me.
Because so many of us think God’s calling only falls on people who look “ready,” who feel qualified, or who have their whole life organized in color-coded folders.
But, Moses was working a regular job!
And, that’s exactly where God interrupted his plans with purpose.
Moses saw something unusual... a whole bush on fire but not burning up!
It wasn’t dramatic in the sense we sometimes imagine.
It was simply different enough to make him stop and pay attention.
Scripture says:
So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight - why the bush does not burn up.” -Exodus 3:3 NIV
And right there, when Moses turned aside, God called his name.
This is the part I love:
God didn’t call Moses until Moses turned toward the thing that caught his attention!
Sometimes God uses a strange, unexpected, inconvenient moment to get your attention because He’s trying to tell you…“What I’m calling you to do is bigger than what you were doing.”
Sharing My Story For You
What God calls you to is never small!
When Moses finally responded, God didn’t call him to something cute or easy.
He called him to deliver a whole nation!
Why?
Because God said:
The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. -Exodus 3:7 NIV
This is where the calling gets real:
Your calling is always connected to someone else’s breakthrough.
Your obedience is always connected to someone else’s freedom.
Your “yes” is always attached to someone else’s answered prayer.
And, that’s when I thought about my own story...my current job.
Even on days where I’m quoting, invoicing, or fixing problems that feel endless, the truth is:
God placed me in a role that solves problems for real people.
And, sometimes that’s the first step of calling...not the final destination, but the classroom.
The training ground. The preparation for what God is building in you next.
Because purpose doesn’t always begin with a platform.
Sometimes it begins with a problem God trusts only you to solve!
And from that moment to now, I’ve learned:
When God calls you, it’s not about your comfort.
It’s about someone else’s freedom!
Here’s how to walk this out:
1. Pay attention to the “strange sight.”
What has been catching your attention lately?
What keeps tugging at you?
Where do you feel God pulling you to look again?
2. Don’t dismiss the ordinary.
God calls people in motion.
He called Moses while working.
He’s calling you in the middle of life, not after you “fix” yourself.
3. Ask this question:
“Who is waiting on my obedience?”
Your calling isn’t random.
Your assignment always serves someone.
4. Pray this simple prayer this week:
“Lord, show me the burning bush in my life, the moment you’re using to get my attention.
I’m listening. I’m willing. Speak to me.”
5. Move with faith, not fear...or feelings.
Moses didn’t feel qualified, and God didn’t care.
God qualifies the called, not the other way around.
Verse of the Day
Exodus 3:3 (NIV) “So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight - why the bush does not burn up.”
If God is calling you…
You’re on the right path even if you feel unsure.
You’re not crazy, you’re chosen.
You’re not unprepared, you’re in training.
And, what He’s calling you to is going to change someone’s life.
Just like Moses, your “yes” will set somebody free.
And bestie?
Don’t ignore your burning bush this week.
You got this!
